About Susan Webster

Maryland artist Susan Webster was born in the District of Columbia but because her father was employed with an international construction firm she grew up on the move, living throughout the United States. Webster graduated from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in the summer of 1986 with a degree in printmaking. She was an Artist in Residence at Millersville University and went on the work as a cartographer for an environmental firm in Philadelphia. She later left her position as an adjunct instructor in painting, drawing and graphic Design at Cecil Community College in 2002 to focus on her art full time.

Travelling around the globe has had the biggest impact on her work as each painting is a new space reflecting a memory of a place once visited or a place yet to be seen. “I want the folks to enjoy my work, let it put a smile on their face and dream to live inside my paintings because it’s a fun, stress free space to chill. Let the painting take you somewhere else for a while.”

Hoping the viewer will bring their own subjective slant to her work Webster makes sure what she wants to be seen is seen, “Step into my world, that glass of wine was poured for you!” In ‘Buttered Popcorn’ a retro telephone sits idle accompanied by a bowl of popcorn and a half full glass of wine leaving one to ponder if the red telephone will ring with exciting news and it’s clear the empty chair is set just for the viewer to gaze upon the landscape. Her style is vivid and mobile, an expressionist abstraction to create a deceivingly simple statement. A table set with food and momentarily abandoned, cut tulips by a desk or bedside and an overstuffed chair is open for the viewer to dive into the scene for the finishing and final brushstroke.

Webster’s acrylic paintings include varying compilations of collagraph prints, charcoal, fabric paints, collage, pastel and impasto on both canvas and paper. Most paintings have a 3-D element to them expanding beyond the canvas edge, who wants to stay within boundaries?
